LOC membership

I will have put nearly 4k miles on the car within 6 weeks (most I think I have ever done in a short time) after this weeks trip to Cardiff and next weekend to Scotland. I have not passed a lot of Lexus on the road up to now in this time - travelled both during day and night and the ones I did see I can count on 4 fingers - 2 x RX / 1 x IS 220 / 1 x IS 200

With seemingly not that many on the road (compared with the merc / bmw clones etc)  I was wondering if the ones I saw were LOC members. Has the forum mods though about having a window sticker available for its members to indicate to others or is that a bit spooky?

Spare key

Ever since I bought the car the spare key has been put away - I guess the battery will be dead by now - will there be any issues with it if I put a new battery in. Will it need to be paired if there is such a process to do or will a battery replacement just bring it back to life? Its been put away now for approx. 4 years.

Auto dim mirror

Is it really noticeable when this function is working (this is for the interior mirror) - I can see the light on and it turns a smokey colour when being lit up not that much that I can say wow that's a good feature.

The sensor on the back of the mirror - between the mirror housing and the windscreen - what function does this have?

Windshield washers problem

My car recently have developed interesting fault. I cannot say it came unexpected, for a while it was intermittent i.e. washer fluid didn't come on the first pull of the leaver.

Over the time I was associating it with maybe half empty washer fluid bottle, rare use or air in the washers tubing.... until recently. Now I can confirm that washer bottle is full, but noting comes up from the jets.. even after 10-20 pulls. Windscreen wipers starts swiping to clean the fluid (which meant to be there), but nothing come out.

I would like to note that head lamps washers works fine, only the windscreen washers are affected.

Any ideas? I guess there should be fuse, so might need to start from that?

Cleaning leather

Hey chaps,

I know this has been covered before, but I wanted you advice about cleaning my cream leather interior.

I bought a Liquid Leather kit from Gliptone which included intensive cleaner, leather conditioner, microfiber clothes and a brush.

I tried it today, and while there was an improvement, it isn't as good as I would like.

Have a look at these:

Before cleaning:

Driver before 1.jpg

Driver before 2.jpg

After:

Driver after 1.jpg

Driver after 2.jpg

I scrubbed and wiped it for about 5 minutes overall, but it wasn't getting any better.

The creases also would budge with the conditioner.

So I was wonder, what would I need to get it properly clean?

Thanks.

Good day. I own a 2006 Lexus IS250 and has done 86K miles. Recently it started indicated Check VSC, Check Engine and Traction lights on the dash board. i took the car to the local dealer for a computer check and the result was a faulty Shift Solenoid C. Can someone kindly help me with a diagram of the shift solenoids with the famous Solenoid C clearly identified. Please.

Terraclean

Here's a topic to create some debate.

I've read that Lexus engines are a bit prone to carbon build up. Am I better using a fuel additive, or going for a Terraclean treatment? Or just using premium fuel most of the time?

Frankly I'm sceptical of Terraclean because it seems to be an expensive way to achieve something you can do more cheaply with additives if you take your time?

Wheel Corrosion

Hey Chaps,

Well, I had an annoying problem yesterday.  I noticed my OSR tyres was sagging, so went to get it filled up.  It read 6psi.  Popped into Kwik Fit, and it turns out that running the tyre flat had damaged the bands on the sidewall and it needs to be replaced.  This is now the 3rd tyre in a year and a half that I have had to change because of damage with plenty of tread still left on it :ranting:

The car has now had a complete set of tyres replaced without a single one being worn out.  (The NSF was replaced by the dealer because it didn't match the others).  My car hates its tyres.

Anyway, now that I have got that off my chest, back to the reason for this post.

It turns out that the leak was caused by corrosion on the inner lip of the alloy.  I have had the wheel  sanded down once, which helped, but it seems they are now too far gone.

So, here's the thing; Has anyone else who has had the same situation got them re-furbished?  And, more importantly, did it solve the problem?

The reason I ask is that the company I have found to do the wheels states that they cannot guarantee that it won't still leak air afterwards.

The alternative is a set of after market alloys since Lexus seem to have stopped selling new ones at a reasonable price.

Thanks.

Not bad MPG

Went to Scotland this weekend - should have been Cardiff but a long story ...

I clocked this MPG (488) - Range + already covered from a full tank. This was 17 miles around town and a roads - the rest was motorway at a steady 70mph (ish)

I reckon it will easily run over the 500 mile mark if it was a full motorway journey. This was £1.10 ASDA normal unleaded fuel

IS250 head gasket

So today my beloved IS250 SE-L was towed to the garage with a suspected blown head gasket at just 109k

Spoke to Lexus and it's not covered under any sort of warranty (thought there was an extended 110k warranty for head gaskets?)

So the garage will give it a head test tomorrow and confirm it or not. Anyone had to foot the bill for this and if so, what am I in for?

Cool easy fix for common squeaky door seals

Found this on the IS300 forum..sorry didn't note the contributors name.

if you get an annoying squeak or rattle from the driver's door, which gets worse in cold weather, means that the rubber seals are dry. I just got Netzett Rubber Care stick off Amazon, applied it to the door sea!s, went for a drive, noise gone. Almost uncanny how quick and effective it is. It cost £7.10 and comes with a neat applicator.

These small victories are important!

Steering

I have an issue when steering round corners - I think its the tyres but anyone confirm this or have experienced it?

Driving round corners - or a roundabout, the car feels like the back end is coming out (understeer on the rear?) Speed round the corners or roundabout is not excessive - following other cars at a slow speed in most cases, 20/20mph max. It doesn't actually slide but feels like it could? Never had this before and it the same both turning left and right although I feel it more when turning right.

My initial thoughts are rear tyres as it feels like the back end is drifting - tread is fine but they don't have a good "edge" to the tread - not worn, its just the way they are designed. They have been on the car since I had it - I have kept a record of work done on the car since I have owned it and the rears have not been changed since I had it almost 4 years (25k) ago so they have lasted well although there is still a good bit of tread on them. I keep the pressures to 38 so they are not deflated either.

Could this be another issue such as shocks - how can I tell .... or any other issue?

Tyre Dust cover cap seized

Ever since I have replaced tyres by kwikfit, the front ones, I had noticed corrosion in the cap. I used to check air regularly so used to use copper grease.

Being busy for a month, didn't do this now one of the cap is seized. How do I unseize it? I tried hot water, wd40 and used a 10mm ratchet but it won't move.

IS250 AC Compressor - Specialists in SW London?

Hey Guys, (and Gals)

I'm in love with my IS250, and have had a bit of a disappointment this past Saturday.

AC Compressor is frozen. if I try to turn it on when stationary the car stalls, if I try to turn it on when driving at speed, I Can hear the belt slipping on what I think is the compressor pulley. I'm gutted :(

Anyway, looking for suggestions from fellow IS250 owners. from what I've read, I'm probably going to need a compressor, a system flush, and a condenser/drier/evaporatior?

@Linas.P  I read your thread where you replaced your compressor, did you replace the condenser/drier/evaporator? has it been OK?

Mine was working fine, up until it died... :(

Worst case scenario I think it will be very close to a grand to get it fixed :(

cheers

Rear window demister

Guys I've only had my is250 a couple of weeks and already I've run into a problem.

Basically the rear window demister has given up the ghost and is not clearing the mist from the rear window. Funny thing is the light on the dash glows to indicate it's switched on but instead of turning off after 15 minutes it's stays on permanently until I switch it off.

Any ideas what the problem could be here?

What To Do Air Bag Light?

$

Hi All

The airbag light started to come on and off intermittently and then one day just came on permanently. What I gather from the internet is

1. Any airbag fault is covered till 5 years 70k miles. As I am on 98K miles and its 56 reg I am pretty much out of both and the last service I did myself so a weak point there as well

2. Normally its just a loose connector under the seat that is the problem. I took both seats off and checked the wiring and it looks fine to me and all connectors are fit well, nothing seems loose.

3. The next thing that usually goes wrong is the wiring loom inside the dash. Lexus charges £3k + to replace it with parts at around £2k + 1K for labour. No electrician out side dealer wants to touch this.

4. Its difficult to tell what is actually wrong with the airbag as just to get the diagnostics done is £150 and can only be done at dealer as the SRS diagnostics is special and normal code readers cant do it.

Other than go down the expensive route of lexus dealer, I cant think of any other way to get it fixed.

Any one has any other suggestions for me?

SRS Airbag Warning Light on 2006 is250

$

I recently had an issue with the airbag warning light staying on while driving my is250 which is out of warranty. I was disturbed to read that some is250 owners have had issues with cars out of warranty having to spend extortionate amounts of money with Lexus dealers to replace in-dash harnesses. Even if it is only a loose connection dealers are only interested in replacing the whole in-dash harness, (very profitably).

I found a simple tip on YouTube that worked for me with the same problem. Before you take the car to the dealers for a fault finding check try this simple procedure. Start the engine and run for 6 seconds, if the airbag light continues to stay on, switch the engine off and leave for 6 seconds then re-start the engine. I done this for 5 consecutive times and the light went off and has stayed off.

I can only guess that this process re-sets the engine management system relating to the SRS airbag system. If that does not work, disconnect the battery terminals for 30 seconds, re-connect and then try the same procedure, if that fails, then you will need to consult the dealer to do a diagnostic check. Hope this tip works for you.
